Polimi visit to Refettorio Ambrosiano

After the kick-off meeting with Coop Lombardia we have have been invited to visit Refettorio Ambrosiano, one of the Non-Profit organizations associated with them. During our visit we were kindly offered lunch by the volunteers working in the structure after which we discussed several points of the project that could be of benefit for the organization and they have expressed keen interest:

  • Establishing a database of the surplus: the volunteers must employ their full creativity in order to effectively use the near expiry surplus that they are delivered each day. With a database that can inform them in advance of the available surplus they can better plan their activites and help reduce wastes.
  • More efficient redistribution: One example that was brought up was the donation of over 600 watermelons. Such seasonal products that often remain unsold arrive in bulk quantities that cannot be handled by them alone. They therefore employ a secondary redistribution by contacting other ONPs on the territory to distribute what they are unable to consume. Therefore, a better redistribution mechanism is needed to save time and effort.
